New England is known for many things, including its often-snowy winters. When the snow hits, many hearty New Englanders find fun and creative ways to play and be active in the wonderous white stuff. One of the most popular winter hobbies is skiing, and throughout the region there are plenty of programs that help youth with mobility and visual impairments participate in this sport.
Adaptive sport programs based at ski resorts and mountains across the region offer numerous ways for youth with mobility or visual impairments to spend a day on the slopes, a great way to boost physical health and have fun in the long winter months. Organizations including Vermont Adaptive Ski and Sports, New England Disabled Sports and Maine Adaptive Sports and Recreation provide lessons and programs led by trained experts for adaptive athletes in Alpine Skiing, Nordic Skiing, Snowboarding and Snow Shoeing. (You can view a full list of organizations that offer skiing programs and other adaptive sports on our website.)
These programs use specialized equipment to allow impaired individuals the ability to experience the freedom of winter sports. Alpine skiing, also known as downhill skiing, takes athletes down snow covered hills and is a great way to improve balance and experience the outdoors. Skiers can ride sitting down on bi- skis, dual skis or a mono ski, or standing up on skis with ski outriggers for extra support. Snowboarding and Nordic Skiing also offer a fun time.
