“This summer I had the privilege of coaching for the Adaptive Sports New England
wheelchair racing program. The program, and organization more broadly, emphasizes inclusion
and collaboration among its personnel, including parents, coaches, and athletes, fostering a
team-oriented culture that ensures all members feel welcomed and supported. Throughout the
season, I not only witnessed athletes’ immediate inclusion of new teammates but parents’
eagerness to help transport and distribute equipment. Moreover, during every practice interval
and race, parents, athletes, and coaches excitedly cheered for each participating member until
they crossed the finish line.
I not only observed these interactions but personally experienced such support. Although
the team had already started its season when I began attending practices, the other coaches
helped and encouraged me to get involved in the action. As the season progressed, I never
hesitated to seek help when adjusting a compensator or strap, as my requests were always met
with an eagerness to assist. The athletes and parents also enthusiastically welcomed me to the
program, quickly learning my name and including me in conversation.
Importantly, the collaboration among all of the program members led to the athletes’
success and a practice environment that was always enjoyable. Throughout the season, it was
exciting to observe this group of primarily young, novice racers set and accomplish new goals,
like improving their competitive drive, pushing technique, and endurance. I am already eager for
the 2025 season to begin, and I am confident that these athletes’ training will translate into even
greater improvements next year!”
