Michael Prout is a lifelong swimmer who has transitioned from elite athlete to accomplished coach. A former Division I swimmer at the University of Massachusetts, he competed at the highest levels internationally, winning gold in the 400m freestyle and bronze in the 100m freestyle at the 2004 Paralympics in Athens at age 18. He went on to compete in Beijing (2008) and served as team captain at the London Games (2012).
For the past decade, Michael has served as Head Swim Coach and Swimming Program Manager with Adaptive Sports New England’s weekly adaptive swim team. He was an assistant coach for Commonwealth Swim Club (2015-2021) before becoming Head Swimming and Diving Coach at Simmons University.
As a Team USA staff coach, Michael’s recent highlights include coaching at the 2019 Parapan American Games, the 2019 and 2022 Para Swimming World Championships, and leading the swim team during the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.
At Simmons University, he has guided the Sharks to runner-up finishes in all four years of his tenure and earned Conference Coach of the Year honors in February 2025.
