Our Athletes and Coaches
Celebrating our athletes and coaches comes naturally. Their dedication to their
sports and determination to achieve their goals make them true game-changers in adaptive athletics.
Vaughn Pfeffer
Vaughn was a life-long athlete. Running. Basketball.
And a successful executive recruiter.
At 34, a spinal cord stroke paralyzed him.
Two years later, he started playing wheelchair basketball, then joined the NE Patriots Wheelchair Football team.
Vaughn IS a life-long athlete.
Maddie Babcock
Maddie Babcock has been swimming for as long as she can remember. Growing up in Belmont, Massachusetts, she had a pool in her backyard, so she learned how to swim very early on.
Quickly, her parents recognized how much she loved being in the water and signed her up for the local swim team when she was seven years old.
Humaira Africawala
Humaira Africawala first began swimming with Adaptive Sports New England (ASNE). At her first swim lesson, she remembers being scared of the water.
However, with the help of her coaches and her family she started coming to the pool every week and growing not only as a swimmer, but also as a person.

He went on to compete in Beijing (2008) and served as team captain at the London Games (2012).
Delmace Mayo
As a kid, Delmace loved to play.
Now he loves to play and compete.
He competes nationally, and internationally on the wheelchair racing team.
He’s that good.
And now he coaches kids who are like he was when we met 12 years ago.
In August, he starts at University of Arizona with their adaptive track team.
Joe Walsh
Adaptive Sports New England is led by Joe Walsh, a native of Braintree, MA, and a graduate of Dartmouth College and UMass Amherst.
He is a two-time Paralympian in cross-country skiing, and former Managing Director of Paralympics for the United States Olympic Committee. Joe served on Team USA’s delegation staff at six Paralympic Games and as Chef de Mission at two Parapan American Games.
