Humaira Africawala
Senior, Simmons University
Humaira’s initial motivation for swimming came from her mom who wanted her to learn how to swim as a life skill.
In middle school, Humaira experienced a sudden loss of function in her legs, requiring use of a wheelchair.
She continued her love of swimming with ASNE and while the physical strength that Humaira gained from swimming helped her become independent as she moved through high school and into college.
“I felt like I couldn’t do anything, but then I saw people who had similar disabilities, and I learned from them.”
Humaira’s participation in adaptive sports has helped her “in all aspects of her life, physically, mentally, socially” and that her mindset around what she is capable of has completely changed.
Humaira is entering her senior year at Simmons University, studying Information Technology and Cybersecurity.
In the future, she aspires to be able to use computer science to increase accessibility and tackle challenges faced by people with disabilites in their daily life.
